Locomotive 1210 Restoration

Locomotive 1210 is the jewel in the crown at Canberra Railway Museum. It is one of only three remaining 12 class locomotives, out of a total of 68 built for NSW Government Railways. In May 1914, 1210 pulled the first train into the fledgling city of Canberra, then under construction, and for this reason 1210 is listed on the ACT Heritage Register.

This heritage listing means that CRM requires a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) to guide future work to preserve the locomotive.  In 2023, the Canberra Railway Museum was awarded an ACT Heritage Grant for the development of a CMP to provide expert advice on the restoration of this special locomotive.  CRM engaged International Conservation Services, who worked with a small group of museum members to develop a draft plan that was lodged with the ACT Heritage Council for formal approval.  Comments were received back on the plan earlier this year, and ICS is working with the project lead to produce a final draft.

CRM will work with the ACT Heritage Council on the options to restore 1210. We will update this project page once the CMP has been approved and work begins.
